Agra AKA Akbarabad is a city on the banks of the river Yamuna in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The city finds mention in the Mahabharata where it was called Agrevaṇa, or ‘the border of the forest’. It achieved fame as the capital of the Mughal emperors 1526-1658 and remains a major tourist destination for thousands of tourists from all over the world who come to admire the ruins of the red sandstone fortress built by the Mughal emperors, and especially for make a pilgrimage to Taj Mahal, the mausoleum known throughout the world under the name of Persian derivation “the light of the palace”, or to visit the abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri . In 1983, the Taj Mahal was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
