The city is famous for its enormous palace fortress on an island in the river Betwa. The island is surrounded by a wall with battlements, the palace-fortress is made ​​up of several buildings built at different times, the main buildings are the Rajmandir and Jahangir Mahal. The Rajmandir is built on a square base and has an appearance almost completely smooth, the Jahangir Mahal is built on a rectangular foundation. The whole roof is surmounted by eight large domes, with some smaller domes that are connected by ornamental balustrades.
