Delhi is located on the banks of river Yamuna in northern India, is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world .

Delhi was been the capital of several Indian empires of the medieval period, and one of the largest cities along the ancient trade routes between India and the north-western regions of the Indo-Gangetic Plain. From that period remain countless monuments and archaeological sites. The Emperor Shah Jahan built the city (now known as “Old Delhi”), which served as the capital of the Mughal Empire from the year 1649 to the year 1857.

When India gained independence from British rule in 1947, New Delhi was designated as the capital and seat of government.
