Town in the Chilean Patagonia region called Ultima Esperanza by the Spanish sailor Juan Ladrilleros, who departed from them in 1557, in search of the Strait used by Magellan. The strait was found in 1830 by Captain Fitzroy aboard of the Beagle. The city had its moment of maximum expansion during the sheep-raising industry development.
