Cairns is located in an area once inhabited by the Irukandji Aboriginal tribe. The area currently occupied by the city of Cairns was discovered in 1770 by Captain James Cook, and was the target of numerous explorations for the subsequent 100 years. This area was initially occupied by a dense mangrove forest, which soon were largely cleared to make way for the new city. Founded in 1876 under the name of William Wellington Cairns (in honor of the Governor of Queensland).
