Oxford (pronounced [ɒksfərd]) is a city of 150,000 inhabitants in the United Kingdom, in the county of Oxfordshire in England. It is home to the University of Oxford, the oldest university in the English-speaking world, and the Ashmolean Museum.
It is known as the “city of dreaming spiers”, a term coined by Matthew Arnold in reference to the harmonious architecture of the university buildings. Unlike Cambridge, Oxford is an industrial city, in particular for the production of cars in the suburb of Cowley.
The city’s name is composed of two words: Ox and Ford which means “ford of the oxen.” The presence of the University of Oxford involves a large influx of students that on the weekend flowing in the streets, animate the city.
